Vienna Sights, Sounds and Hotels
Looshaus was designed by Adolf Loos, who played an instrumental role in the development of modern 20th-century architecture. The structure is built from stucco and glass, opposite the Imperial Palace entrance on August Michaelerplatz. Two hundred years of Baroque and neo-Baroque lavishness became too much, and Loos promoted buildings that were simple, candid, and practical. Upon the erection of this particular building in 1911, the people of Vienna were appalled, but the restored interior remains a splendid surprise. Today Looshaus is a bank, and it is worthwhile to go inside to see the elegant chambers and staircase.
Vienna, the showpiece of the Habsburg dynasty controlled Europe of over 600 years, and now, moving to the future we have Vienna's Looshaus which is still going strong as a design house today. The fantastic Vienna hotels are also a blend of the old and the new and so there is something for everybody in Vienna.
